MONUMENT OF MODERNITY: This revolutionary structure was designed by scientist & philosopher Buckminster Fuller, who actually patented the technology and devised the name ‘geodesic’, for the Union Tank Car Company in 1958. At the time, it was the largest clear span stusture in the entire world. It was constructed entirely of steel panels and tubes at very low cost. Still today it is the ninth largest geodesic dome ever built, by diameter. The building was demolished(!) by its current owner, Kansas City Southern Railway, in November 2007 -just a year before it becomes eligible to be listed.
